Episode Review: 1x14 "Truth, Justice, and the American Way"

By Corinne McCreery

I apologize for not getting the comic review up like I said I was going to, but some important personal things came up.

The pain on Kara’s face in the opening scene, was just another testament to Melissa’s amazing acting chops. I also absolutely loved the bits of Kryptonian culture (and the mention of RAO!) that we got in this episode. It was also driven home again that Krypton had abolished Capital Punishment, and that makes me very happy.

Chyler Leigh portraying the guilt that she’s dealing with, keeping this painful secret from Kara, was amazing. The nod to another Interstellar Bounty Hunter was fantastic. I really want to see Lobo on this show now.

Nice to see that Max got his Netflix, and apparently has a past thing with J.Law. Interested to see what happens with him out of the DEO next week.

Yay for Siobahn! She is delightful, and really fun to dislike. I look forward to seeing a lot more of her. Her interplay with Kara was great, and her sneakiness was brilliant.

So, many of my least favorite Supergirl stories are the ones where she is played up to dwell too much on the darker side of her emotions. I’ve said before that that’s not what I need the character to be, and it’s absolutely not what the version I love the most is. That said, when it’s done right and with good reason, it works immensely well, as it does in this episode. She’s falling prey to those emotions, but she’s doing so with good reason, with a lot of pain in her heart. And she still has her support system to pull her out of it. Usually in the comics when it happens, it stays that way for a long time. That hasn’t been the case in the show. This episode in particular, beautifully showed her struggling with ideas of morality. The conversation between James and Kara was one of the most powerful scenes of this season, which is saying a lot.

I really enjoyed the absolute beauty that was Lexi Alexander (well known for her job directing Punisher War Zone) directing an episode that dealt with a “Judge, Jury and Executioner” style vigilante. Lexi did an amazing job with this episode, hammering the morality points home with wonderful character moments, but still showing us glorious action sequences. The first fight between Kara and the Master Jailer in particular was amazing. Though my favorite scene was the one toward the end with Kara and the Professor. “Thank you Miss Kara.”

We'll be back next week with "Solitude." Until then, the cast and crew are trying to get CBS's attention, so if you have a Twitter account, tweet using the hashtag #SupergirlSeason2 so that we can have another season of this wonderful show.

Corinne McCreery has been a fan of comic books for over twenty years, and a fan of Supergirl in particular for just about that long. Other comic characters near and dear to her heart are the members of the New Teen Titans (Especially Nightwing), Kitty Pryde and Roy Harper. Other non-comic related interests include water skiing and tattoos, of which she has five, three of which are comic related. One of the best days of her life came when she met Dean Cain, and was able to recreate the famous Crisis on Infinite Earths cover with the Man of Steel that she grew up with. Currently she lives in Oakland, CA; a transplant from South Dakota. You can find her online on tumblr at effyeahsupergirl or Twitter at @corimarie21, where you will likely find her live-tweeting the west coast airing of Supergirl every week.
